"We'll be watching its chart performance very closely in the build-up to its July 7 release."

Not sure how they're planning on doing that, but they'll have to look right at the top of said non-existent chart Smile

It shows why second-album syndrome exists with all those journalist idiots looking for another pathetic story.  The comments below are all good though, so I think he's very wrong Smile

Considering Join With Us is that 'awkward 2nd album', I dare say the fact that it's sales are 'respectable' is an achievement (not to mention that their debut album has been out a bit longer than this one, and still continues to sell - it has every right to have sold more than this one). As far as I'm aware, before trying something new, most bands make their first 3 or 4 albums in the same vein; to say that the public is bored with the band barely two years after the first album would beg a rather more daunting question: is the public demanding that a band change it's style of music after every album? I'm actually impressed that, amongst the pop songs that the band's famous for, The Feeling tweaked the genre a bit and threw in a couple of songs that weren't out-and-out pop. To my ear it made the album slightly less coherent than Twelve Stops and Home, but I admire them for putting in the effort to shake things up. Join With Us is anything but boring, but the problem is that the average listener isn't going to own the album; they're going to be hearing the songs and making a judgement of the singles. I can't see any reason why people won't like Turn It Up (unless, if they're like me, the 'escalator' lyric jarred with them the first time around - repeated listenings will cure that, though), but it's not the end of the world if they don't. That's not even taking into account all of the music listeners who get behind new music and bands before instantly moving on to another new group once the band stops for a while. It's no surprise, then, that after all the hype of the first album has worn off, the sales of the new one aren't going to be quite as high.

There are many, much more subtle factors contributing to this apparent trend rather than just being bored by the band. And on the upside, I do seem to recall they're playing most of the major festivals this year as well as supporting Bon Jovi. Even if the band doesn't have as big a support from the plebs as they did the first time around, that sort of itenerary doesn't read much like 'tanking', does it?

well said trillian. Still I think the first 2 singles weren't chosen well.  sorry Smile

ITIWO was a good choice for the debut single, however Without You wasn't brilliant. It doesn' have much commercial appeal. It was first written with the Virginia Tech Massacre in mind, not it's potential as a single, therefore should remain as an album track.

Turn It Up however is perfect as is Join With Us, as they have more potential with people who contirbute to the charts through download.

Also, Without You didn't receive much publicity, so...

    Nerr! Stick out tongue

(but Trillian, that "escalator" lyric... At first I thought it was "elevator" and I was shocked why they would pretend to be so American. It just didn't seem like them. Now I think it's brilliant!)

I understand that it was not the record companies desired choice of second single, so I can guess they didn't exactly throw themselves wholeheartedly into the promo work.. Indifferent

Without promotion, it is understandable that a single isn't going to chart as high as others... Wink

Am a little worried (and puzzled) that with only just over 2 weeks to go for the physical release, Turn it Up is still not on any R1 playlist and is not available for pre-order at HMVHuh?

My sources tell me the release for the single has been pushed back by a fortnight, so as to allow a big promo push.  It is in everyones interests, the bands, the record company, the management, for this track to do well..

Re: not exactly impressed by this!

Well said Trillian, I'm sorry to completely chop most of your comment but I just wanted to comment on a couple of specific parts.

    Trillian:
the problem is that the average listener isn't going to own the album; they're going to be hearing the songs and making a judgement of the singles.

I'm not sure if I agree or disagree with the above comment Huh? in a way a bit of both.  If I look at the way I buy albums (asides from The Feeling). I don't rush out and buy instantly on release. I tend to find myself slowly persuaded to buy after hearing 2 or 3 singles and warming to them. I wouldn't assume to like a 2nd or 3rd album just because I liked the 1st and I would bide my time before buying any album. I also tend to buy albums after seeing a live performance and being impressed that way. Therefore, based on this, if I were not a fan I'm not sure I'd have been persuaded to by the 2nd album yet either.  With only the first single getting lots of airplay and no real festival activity yet, I'm not sure that I would even be aware that there was an Album 2 if I were not a fan.

    Trillian:
That's not even taking into account all of the music listeners who get behind new music and bands before instantly moving on to another new group

This is true, it seems to be seen as cool at the moment to try to be first to discover the next big thing.

    Trillian:
on the upside, I do seem to recall they're playing most of the major festivals this year as well as supporting Bon Jovi.

Yes, festival season seems to be dragging it's heels to get going this year, I don't know about anyone else but album release seems like such a long long time ago a distant memory. Festival season needs to kick off so that they can get out and make people aware they here and have an album just waiting to be purchased.

Right, I just wanted to voice my opinion on this sort of topic

In my eyes, The Feeling will be around for a long time yet, they have a very dedicated fanbase, and a undeniable talent for creating really good, inteligent and credible pop music - it's not all about chart positions. Although it would be nice to see some more top 10 hits, (Turn It Up deserves to be a big hit) there's a lot more to it than that. As much as I'm sure the guys want to appeal to as many people as possible, as long as they continue doing what they do best, we'll all be happy! They're a great bunch of guys, and there's bound to be criticism, as with anything. But they should just ignore and keep believing, as I'm sure they do, and keep on filling our hearts with joy with good melodies for years to come!
